As you can see from the map below termites are found in New Bern NC
as well as most of the southern states. Is this something to be
concerned about? Well, it is certainly something to be
aware about. It is important to have your
home inspected by a licensed professional pest control
agent on an annual basis. Termites work rather slowly and will not do any
significant damage in less than a years time. If you will do this you will not likely have any damage
When you are looking to buy a house it is a good idea to see if the house is currently under a termite bond, and if so is the contract transferable. If it is, great. If not, it could be expensive, $1000-$2000, to do the necessary treatments required to put it under bond. Your real estate agent, hopefully me, should be able to help you with this.

The biggest problem with termites is that the damage
that cause is usually hidden until it gets totally out
of control. Termites can work an area over for years and
you might never know they are there.
Termites often work in wall cavities that are hidden
by drywall and exterior siding. They totally destroy the
structure of the wood from the inside. Sometime you
cannot even tell the wood has been damaged until you
touch it and it literally crumbles in your hand.
You often see winged termites swarming in the warm months as some
of the colony members will fly off to start another colony.
Once they reach their destination
they then drop to the
ground, shed their wings, pair off
with a mate, and attempt to begin
new colonies in the soil. Few
swarmers emerging outdoors survive
to start new colonies. Swarmers
emerging indoors are incapable of
eating wood, seldom survive, and are
best removed with a vacuum. They do,
however, indicate that an
infestation is present.
