of blue grass, country and gospel; Conch Stew’s rendition of beach music and
oldies; and last but not least, New Diamond Jubilee will be a treat for fans of
rhythm & blues and gospel music.
Everyone’s favorite, Rick Hubbard and his Kazoobie Kazoo Band will also be back
this year. Audience members are given a kazoo to join the Kazoo Kazoobie band.

sponsored by Joe Alcoke Auto and Truck Center, features the 2010
Corvette C6R ALMS show car, Victory Lane Photos, artifacts from Corvette’s
storied racing history, and a number of championship trophies. Be sure to have
a digital photo taken with your favorite racecar driver!
Big Kidstuff and Lil’ Kidstuff
Fantastick Patrick
juggles
swords, fire, balls and clubs! He balances huge objects on his face, rides a
6-foot unicycle and demonstrates an amazing Chinese yo-yo
routine. Fantastic Patrick performs three shows daily at the intersection of
Middle and Broad Streets.
Children (and adults!) will love the Silver Drummer Girl who looks like a statue
until she comes to life, the very tall Uncle Sam and other street performers
such as the popular puppet show with the Gabardine Sisters, Poly and Ester.
Artist Tim Decker paints large portraits of celebrities in less than 10
minutes! You won’t believe your eyes as you watch Tim work!
At the amusement park, families will find a wide variety of things to do,
including the Merry Go Round, Full Tilt, Gondola and, of course, the Bumper
Cars. The amusement park has rides for both the brave and not so brave at heart
– whichever you prefer – you’ll find it here.
Start out your Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Union Point Park with the 5K and 1
Mile Family Fun Run/Walk. What a great way to start the day! Call 252.639.2907
for more information.
Be sure to
stop by the Sudan Temple to see the Thomas the Train layout by the Carolina
Coastal Railroaders. Thomas is a cheeky, little wooden train with lots of
friends and accessories that make him lovable. On a grander scale, the double
track HO scale model railroad in the first floor exhibit area is a marvel of
detail and technical know-how.
For the younger water lovers, the Coast Guard Auxiliary brings "Coastie", their
walking, talking boat mascot. A blue and white robot, Coastie has navigational
lights, searchlights, a rotating beacon, a siren, an air horn and moving eyes
and eyelids. Visit Coastie at the Coast Guard Auxiliary booth in Union Point
Park.
Dog lovers
will be amazed when they see the K-9 demonstrations by the New Bern Police
Department’s 4-legged officers in three shows on Saturday. You may even pick up
some training tips by watching the Field Retriever Demonstrations by Weller
Kennels, but we ask that you leave your dogs at home.
Arts and crafts displays, music, amusement park rides, magicians and street
performers, puppet shows and face painters all go together to make MUMFEST a
great fun filled weekend for everyone in the family.
Hey, Sailor!
Boaters and wannabe boaters will head straight for Union Point to see the 9th
Annual Boat Show. In addition to all the trailerable boats, there will be
maritime exhibits, military vessels, nautical displays and demonstrations. And,
because it’s nearing the end of the boating season, you may even find a great
deal on a boat.
Garden Lovers!
All 13 Tryon
Palace gardens will be open free in honor of MUMFEST. Be sure to stroll over to
the palace to see the colorful displays of chrysanthemums and other fall blooms.
Getting to MUMFEST
Be sure to go to the web site
www.mumfest.com
for help planning your weekend and to see a complete list of all the family
entertainment at MUMFEST this year! You’ll also find a map on the web site

RE: “O’Blatherskite” Murder Mystery Dinner Show Extended
For Immediate Release
If you haven’t tried your hand at solving “Who Killed Mr. O’Blatherskite?,” you
still have four chances to do so.
The Athens of the South production, originally set to perform its last show on
September 10 and 11, has been extended for October 1 and 2, as well. The dinner
and show, slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina, New
Bern, costs $40 per ticket; $35 for groups of ten or more, and for military
families.
The comic story involves a train in the old west: much-reviled railroad
president Gregory Blaine O’Blatherskite has been found dead in his car and a
cast of misfits—including a conductor, a sheriff, his addled deputy, an
ambitious bounty hunter, a con-artist and his reputed sister—must solve it
before the train reaches its next destination.
Between scenes the characters wander among the audience, answering questions as
the audience takes a crack at solving the case. At the conclusion of the show,
the closest guess wins a prize.
Actors for the show are Chuck Baker, Erin Cherry, Bill Hand, Nancy Hitchcock,
Eddie Moore, and Paul White. Hand also wrote and directed the show.
Catering is by Strange and Sons Catering.

Saturday Cemetery Tours to
Debut September 19
Weekly tours of historic Cedar Grove Cemetery
will debut at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Departing from the
Cemetery’s main gate, the tours will feature information about both well and
lesser known Cedar Grove “residents.” They are a collaborative effort of the New
Bern Historical Society and the Earl of Craven Questers’ Chapter.
“Cedar Grove Cemetery has a fascinating tale
to tell. Our tours will be factually based, but we hope that they will be
entertaining, as well,” according to Questers’ president Nancy Mansfield. “Each
of us is pursuing our own research about the Cemetery as well as relying on
information already available. You might say that the tours are a work in
progress.”
Questers is an international organization
dedicated to historic preservation. The local chapter consists of 21 members,
all of whom live in the Historic District, and raises funds to underwrite
preservation and restoration in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The large text panel
located just inside the gates was a Questers’ acquisition. The group has also
underwritten restoration of brick work on old graves, work on paths and
landscaping, and workshops on tombstone cleaning.
Tours will be offered each Saturday at 4 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Historical Society during regular
office hours, 9:30-4:30 Monday through Friday, or at the gates.
