Taberna is one of the
newest retirement communities in the New Bern area. Located about 10
minutes from historic downtown New Bern and 30 minutes from the beaches
of the Crystal Coast, Taberna is by anyone's standard
a quality neighborhood. Approximately 800 homes weave in, on, and around one of
Eastern North Carolina's finest golf courses.
Home prices in Taberna range from $170,000-$600,000. The average home in Taberna sells
for approximately $280,000. For this price you will get around 2600 heated square feet and a 2 or
2.5 car garage. There are smaller homes,1600 square feet, as well as some town homes and patio homes. Although the neighborhood is mostly built out there are still a few building
lots available. If building could be in your future we can help you find a good building lot and a reputable builder. Steve was a custom home builder for 20 years knows the pittfalls to avoid when building a home.
Golf course membership is optional and those that choose to join
the country club have access to the golf course, swimming pool, Har-true tennis courts,
and a really nice driving range. The golf course is considered one of the best in Eastern
NC. Membership rates are very reasonable, and getting on the course is rarely a problem. There is a very active Men's and Ladies Golf Association so getting a game is easy.

is one of Eastern North Carolina's finest. It is one of the top 3 golf courses that I have played in Eastern N.C. Above is a photo of number 9, a tough par 5 with a green that is surrounded by trouble.
Other amenities include advanced fiber optic telecommunications wired in each home,
sidewalks, swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness center, pickle ball court, and small community parks. Carolina Colours is also located just a short distance from Creekside Park, the largest facility in the County.

conveniently located off of Highway 70 East, about 8 miles from historic
downtown New Bern and 28 miles from the beaches of the Crystal Coast.

Greenbrier is another wonderful retirement community located near the shopping district of New
Bern and close to almost all of the medical practices in the area. This quality, highly sought after subdivision,
has approximately 750 homes was started in 1986. Yours truly, Steve Tyson, built the first home in Greenbrier. It was origionally suppose to be a 60 lot neighborhood, however it proved to be such a popular location they built a golf course and developed 600 more lots. By 1995 Greenbrier was essentially built out.
Nestled among what used to be a Weyerhaeuser tree farm many consider Greenbrier to be the most convenient location among all the
planned communities in New Bern. Because Greenbrier is located within
the city limits of New Bern you will pay county and city property taxes.
A championship 18 hole golf course and club house is the hub of the community. Designed by Rees Jones, this
course is a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The country club
also has a swimming pool, clay tennis courts, and a first class practice

Although the subdivision does not have sidewalks the roads are quite wide and allow
plenty of space for pedestrians to walk or bike. Within biking
distance from Greenbrier is Craven Community College which
offers adult classes ranging from beginning computer skills to
advanced college level courses. Its fun to learn, right?

$130,000. There is also a selection of townhomes and condo's. Homes sell quickly in Greenbrier so if you see something you like you must act quickly.

Located about 15 minutes from historic downtown New Bern,
Fairfield Harbour is a paradise for
boaters, sailors, tennis players, bikers, and golfers. Fairfield Harbour is
New Bern's only gated community with a security guard on duty 24/7.
The Neuse River is about 3 miles wide at Fairfield Harbour
making it a popular destination for sailors.
Fairfield is located outside of the city of New Bern, so residents pay only County property taxes. However a $790
per year HOA fee is assessed to each property. This fee pays for security personal, private roads, community parks, community building, community boat launch and dock, and a few other amenities. For information on the HOA click the link below.
Fairfield Harbour HOA
There are hundreds of homes in Fairfield located on deep water, protected, canals and creeks. I haves seen 50' sailboats docked behind some of the homes there. Fairfield has over 30 miles of private roads which are great for walking, jogging, and cycling. Many folks use their golf carts or bicycle to get around the community. Amenities located within
the subdivision include an 18 hole golf course, tennis courts, miles of

The people who live in Fairfield Harbour make this a very special place to
call home. With around 85% retiree's, this active community gives a lot back to Craven County in
the way of volunteerism. Fairfield Harbour has a plethora of special
interest clubs and groups so you are sure to meet many new friends that have the

Existing interior home prices begin around $130,000. Expect to pay around $225,000-$300,000 for

Located about 6 minutes from the center of New Bern, River Bend was the areas first golf
and waterfront planned community. The development was incorporated as
the City of Riverbend in the early 1980's and today has a population of around 3000. This small town has consistently been rated one of the safest cities in North Carolina. Most of the homes in River Bend were built in the 1970's, 80's, and early 90's. Home prices range from $70,000 for a town home to $210,000 for a golf
course home. Water front homes begin around $225,000. The average single family non waterfront home sells for about $160,000. Due to the age of the homes expect to do some upgrades when you buy a home here.
The River Bend Golf Course had a complete makeover a few years ago and is now one of the areas finest
courses. Initiation fees are very reasonable and monthly dues are around $170. Not bad
for a great course with a lighted driving range, tennis courts, large swimming pool, and a service restaurant with excellent food. For more information on the country club
River Bend also has a well protected marina capable of handling boats up to 45 feet. The city maintains a kayak launch and there are miles and miles of waterways to explore either by kayal, or by power boat.

courts and the best USTA tennis club in Eastern North Carolina.

River Bend is comprised of about 60% retirees and 40% working couples. As with Fairfield Harbour
there are many different clubs and organizations within the community to and new friends are always easy to meet.
Golf, Tennis, boating, and miles of walking and biking friendly roads make Riverbend a very
special place to live. In addition, there are 3 restaurants within the community and even a small library. Add very reasonable real estate prices and it all makes for a great place to call home.

Historic Downtown New Bern
Downtown New Bern is, in my humble opinion, the finest historic district in North Carolina, and perhaps one of the finest small city historic districts in the nation. It is adorned with many beautiful historic homes and buildings some dating back to the late 1700's. In the last few years more and more folks, especially retirees, are expressing interest in living in a small historic downtown neighborhood. Some of the amenities on their wish list include,

Downtown New Bern offers all of this and much more. It really has a small town charm that so many retirees are now searching for.
Living downtown will allow you to park your car and reap the benefits of a healthy dose of walking or biking. On any given day you will find dozens of folks walking their dog, working in their gardens, and just sitting on their front porch reading a book and enjoying life. Many of the retirees are active in the many non profits in the community. Trust me, you can stay as active as you want here volunteering for one of the many fine non profits.
The town of New Bern was founded in 1710 by an English explorer, John Lawson, and a Swiss entrepreneur, Baron Degraffinreid. Downtown is alive with fashionable shops, 13 restaurants, The Historic Tryon Palace, The N.C. History Museum, art shops, antiques shops, crafts and clothing shops, gourmet coffee shops, and several excellent civic theaters. Union Point Park has a public boat ramp, fishing docks, day boat slips, swing sets, and restroom's. And all this is within walking distance if you live downtown.
Stroll along the downtown river walk and admire some of the beautiful Hatteras Yachts which are made right here in New Bern. The Neuse and Trent Rivers converge in downtown New Bern and form the widest river in North America. The Neuse is a paradise for sailors, power boaters, fishermen, kayakers, and paddle boarders. New Bern has an incredible amount of waterways to explore. There are three nice marinas located within biking distance. Did you know New Bern was named one of the top ten waterfront retirement locations in the U.S.?
Historic downtown New Bern is quickly becoming known as a destination city for artist. The downtown area has a profusion of talented artist as well as several art galleries. Do you have a talent or passion for theatre? There are theatre productions going on year around. And, it's easy to get involved.

In several locations historic homes have been converted to small shops on ground floors with living quarters on the second and third floors. Several historic homes have been converted in B&B's. Some sections are strictly for residential use. Some of the buildings in the business district have shops on the first floor and living quarters on the second.
