Realtor Steve Tyson at the beautiful New Bern Water Front

Hello. My name is Steve Tyson and I have spent much of my life enjoying the beautiful waters of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. The picture shown above was taken at Union Point which is located in downtown New Bern, NC. This is where the Trent and Neuse Rivers converge and at this point the Neuse River is about 1 mile wide. The mouth of the Neuse River is the widest in the United States and is a haven for sailing, fishing, and boating.

The Neuse River is the 2nd largest estuarine system in the US. It was named in1584 after the Neusiok Indians.

The Neuse River is estimated to be 2 million years old.  Native Americans settled along the banks of the Neuse as early as 14,000 years ago.  Early native American settlers included the Tuscarora, Coree, Neusiok, and Secotan tribes.

The Neuse and Tar Rivers are shown in the picture on the left. The Neuse River begins in the Piedmont area of North Carolina and empties in the Pamlico Sound. The total length of the river is 195 miles. As you can see from the map on the left, the river is narrow until it reaches the New Bern area where it gets progressively wider.

Fishing in the Neuse

Fishing in the Neuse River can be a remarkable experience as the variety of different fish species is quite remarkable. Salt water fish, such as shark, porpoise, speckle trout, grey trout, blue fish, crooker, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, will make it all the way upriver to New Bern during certain times of the year. Large and smallmouth bass, strip bass, flounder, drum, brim, and  catfish can be caught year around. Click below to get info on fishing tournaments.

The picture below shows my brother with a remarkable 58 lb. strip bass caught in February, 2008, in the Neuse River about 2 miles from downtown New Bern.

Boating in the Neuse

The Neuse River offers a plethora of boating activities. From canoes to the hundred foot hatteras yachts that are manufactured in New Bern NC there are ample opportunities for everyone who loves the water.
