What makes Lake New Bern so special?
Why the lake, of coarse. The lake was created in the early 1980's when Renny
Creek mining company purchased a 90 acre tract of land in the middle on
New Bern. The mine was excavated to a depth of around 35 feet deep and marl was
extracted and sold to local construction companies. The pit is connected to the
Renny's Creek
via 2 large culverts that run underneath a road way on the back side of the
property. On a high tide water from the Neuse River backs up into Renny's Creek
and spills over into Lake New Bern. This keeps the lake flushed out and allows fish, turtle,
and even crab to swim into the lake
resulting in a smorgasbord of aquatic species.
Because
the lake is so voluminous fish tend to grow to large sizes. Numerous bass in
excess of 10 pounds have been caught. The picture on the right shows me with a
9 lb. largemouth bass. Well, maybe not quite 9 lbs.

The excellent fishing brings
in the professionals such as this heron shown on the left. Also found on fishing the clear waters of Lake New Bern are osprey and bald
eagles. According to a local birdwatcher the eagle's nest nearby on the Neuse
River. Duck and geese also frequent the lake in the winter.
